The teacher deregistered for corrupting young minds with non-CCP ideas is barred from all school campuses. It looks as if Beijing’s officials are demanding maximum punitive melodrama in handling this case, and the Education Bureau dreamed up this sex-offender-type sanction because tattooing ‘Danger to child safety’ on the corruptor’s forehead is a bit too CY Leung.
And Hong Kong U’s boss fires (or does not renew the contract of) a renowned disease expert, Keiji Fukuda. The university has lost a string of people in this field recently, and it looks like a political purge. HKU has also announced a new motto – ‘Better Red than expert’.
To add to the banana-republic ambience, Canada is giving Hong Kong dissidents asylum as political refugees.
And investment website Motley Fool pulls out from Hong Kong, with a guarded warning against holding too much Mainland/HK in your portfolio.
Just another normal day in Hong Kong, 2020.
Pressure to publish the name of the disqualified teacher should be countered with strong demands that the identity of the person or group making the accusations be revealed. This would put into perspective the intention behind the action.
That anonymous accusations are entertained at all indicates that there is opportunity for gross abuse.
Excellent point Mary.
To place any topic completely off limits for discussion is often a strong indication that the party banning it is not confident of having strong enough arguments to prevail in a free debate on the issue. Just saying.
I have no idea why there is a fuss about HKU’s Keiji Fukuda. His contract has terminated and he is well beyond the institution’s standard retirement age (66 years as against 60). For context, when I periodically employ a nice young thing to extract my tadpoles, I am not anticipating that I will have to make use of their services the next time, or five or ten years hence.
Low Profile
The point is there is no “free debate”.
As to Mary Melville’s very valid point one has to woner whether the complaint was anonymous.
Worth checking out “Gestapo” on Wiki. Apparently not the omnipresent force of common conception it was in fact a relatively small scale outfit that could only function effectively with the assistance of large numbers of denunciations and tip-offs from the local populace.
Customs, in the last two weeks, have seized 17,810,000 laxative tablets.
No great loss to the regularity of the HK population. Listening to the pronouncements of the administration is probably sufficient.
Oh for heaven’s sake, Reactionary Sexist Pig #4, you really need to step in front of a bus ASAP. But you’re a good troll, which is some aspiration to have.
Don’t. Feed. The. Toad.
Reactor #4
Into the bums of how many boys (I believe you call them “nice young things”) have you infiltrated your meagre supply of “tadpoles” over the years?
I really do think we should be told.
I really do think we shouldn’t!
Ouch, Red Dragon. Please don’t be so 1955.
